There are many tropical island paradises in the world, but Phuket continues to rate right up there as one of the very best. Phuket "The Pearl of the Orient" is Thailand largest island located in the Andaman Sea and is about 870 kilometers south of Bangkok. Phuket, an international destination blessed with white-powdered, palm-fringed virgin beaches, turquoise waters and surrounded by island - dotted seas.
Choosing accommodation in Phuket comes down to choosing the beach and then the budget. Working North to South we find: Patong: was one of the first beaches to see the arrival of tourists. It's is now a booming little town that has a wide selection of shops, restaurants, banks, bars and discotheques. This is the center of Phuket's night life; a huge party place that can get quiet noisy. The beach is superb although a little crowded and all activity's can take place here. Karon: 4km south of Patong lies Karon. Karon is more of a big village and is blessed with the longest beach in Phuket. You will find here a good selection of hotels and restaurants and in the center some shops, money changers and of course, all the night life. Kata: 2km south of karon lies Kata. This is the beach where Club Med choose to build their Resort. Although it has enormously developed in the recent years, Kata still has a lot of charm. You can find here many boutiques, food stalls, money changers, restaurants and bars. Kata Noi: 2km south of Kata, this beach is still very quiet. The Kata Thani occupies most of the beach in its northern part and in the south Tapkaew Bungalows. You will find here a few shops, restaurants and bars. Chalong: is growing fast. Chalong peer is where the boats leave for cruises or day trips. Chalongs population is mostly residents, so their are not so many hotels, just a few very nice resorts and apartments for long term lease. What you will find here are all the facility's such as: supermarkets, banks, boats, dentists, doctors and even a vet. Nai Harn: again a fast growing region lying far south of Phuket. Nai harn has still much of it's magic and is still considered by it's residents as paradise. The beach is superb and is lined with a few small restaurants. Nai Harn is definitely the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun. It also has some very nice restaurants such as Mimi's and the Royal Meridien has elected this place to build their resort. Rawai: lies on the south point of Phuket Island and is growing fast with new resorts mushrooming near the beach. This is definitely on of the places to enjoy thai style sea food. Their are many stalls all along the shore and a few restaurants that will serve you succulent dishes straight from the ocean. Surrounding Islands: Phuket is surrounded by many smaller Islands all more beautiful than the other. These are the places to get a real taste of a Tropical Paradise and the true Oriental serenity. |
