EXPEDITIONS - ESPRESSO TRAPANI 2006 Home
OBJECTIVES AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Top
The objectives of this expedition are to dive and collect data on:
1. The Espresso Trapani, a commercial ferry built in 1983. This wreck has been visited by only a handful of diver’s rests in 112m of water.
2. An unidentified and unexplored wreck resting in 140m of water. We don’t know much about this ship but we presume it’s a war ship due to debris we have found.
3. An unidentified wreck, resting in 50m of water.

The Espresso Trapani

This new project was born through Patrizio Salvaggio’s research work, after many years of identifying and pin-pointing the exact location of new wrecks in the Trapani Sea.

During this event we will be assisted by the Doctor Giovanni Maurizio Salvaggio, (specialised in internal medicine, Director of the non invasive hypertensive unit and vascular diagnoses of internal medicine at the S. Antonio Abate di Trapani Hospital). Dr Salvaggio will run tests on two specific decompression models and help us define more precisely the effect of gas choices on levels of micro bubbles (Isobaric counter diffusion).

The Espresso Trapani expedition is the opportunity to gather members of other dive teams with the OZD Dive Team as well as a few new members (who display the right qualifications and personality to successfully undertake difficult dives).

This new team will be composed by some of the most qualified specialists in deep diving and mixed gas diving. It brings together international experts from different horizons such as underwater photography and video, cave diving, archaeology, and diving medicine. The Team will also be using some of the most modern technologies.

Preliminary relation of Dr Salvaggio

20 dives where monitored by means of velocimeter doppler and ecolord doppler to depth of 47m for 25min, 96m for 10-15min and 106m for 15-25min.The doppler examinations where done in premature times (ie on the boat) and after a delay of 2-hours in a proper medical environment dedicated to instrumental patient examination. The doppler survey was done on different sites, the femoral, the subclaviculary and precoridal vein with observation between 30sec and 3min. After 3 dives to 106m a transcranic doppler within 2 hours of the dives was done.

The preliminary data found was:

60% of the dives, no presence of detectable bubbles Degree 0
15% showed occasional bubbles Degree I
10% showed bubbles in less than 50% of the cardiac cycle Degree II
15% showed bubbles in every cardiac cycle Degree III
No Degree IV bubbles where detected.

Evidence of Degree III bubbles where linked to type I MDD (ie simple joint or muscle pain).

The data that was harvested will serve for ulterior analysis in relation to different dive times and levels of stress.
