EXPEDITIONS - SCAPA FLOW Home
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Top
Join in for a 7days trip to the German ships of the High Sea Fleet scuttled in the now famous Scapa Flow. The natural harbour is about 18km long and formed by two small islands (the Orkney Islands) lying north of Scotland. The diving is run from the fishing village of Stomness on the the main island. There are many activities other than diving in Scapa; numerous music festivals take place here and there are plenty of archealogical sites to be visited (some of which over 5000 years old). Kirkwall, the main town and the airport lies 15min from Stromness. All the facility's can be found there, souvenir shops, stores, restaurants, pubs, clubs and banks. A visit to the Highland Parks whisky brewery is recommended when the weather is not at its best for diving, and the local pubs are always a good place to relax after a days diving.
DIVING
Top
6 days of diving on the best wrecks of the Orkney Islands. The bay of Scapa Flow is a ship cemetery of the 1st and 2nd world war. Some of the most famous ones are the Minelayer SMS Brummer, the Light Cruisers SMS Dresden, SMS Köln and SMS Karlsruhe, and finally the Battleships SMS Markgraf and SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm. Among the other diving options are the block ships such as the Gobernador, the Tabarka, the F2 or the UB116. Scapa is also a good place to observe seals on the smaller surrounding islands. All the dives can be done on Nitrox; the diving depth is between 10 and 45 meters, visibility ranges from 5-15m and water temperature is around 13°C (a dry suit is recommended).
