| WRECKS - VLCC HAVEN | ||
| GENERAL DESCRIPTION | ||
The VLCC Haven was a supertanker
of 109'700 tx measuring a total length of 334m, 51.6m at the beam and
50m high. Her crew was made of 36 men. |
||
| HISTORY | ||
The VLCC Haven was one of the
four supertankers built between 1972 and 1973 by the spanish shipyard
Astilleros Espanoles SA (Cadiz), all will met a fatal destiny. The first
ship to go down was the famous Amoco Cadiz who wrecked on the
coast of Brittany on the 16th of March 1978, leaking some 230'000 tonnes
of heavy fuel. Two years later the Maria Alejandra whent down
on the 11th of March 1980 along the cost of Mauritania, and on the 3rd
of April of the same year, its the turn of the Mycene along the
cost of Senegal. On the 12th of April 1991, after a violent explosion
of one of her tanks, the Haven catches fire. She his towed by
the Olanda to move her away from the the harbor of Genova, but
finally, she sinks with still on board 144'000 tonnes of heavy fuel (Iranian
Heavy). |

| DIVE SITE | ||
| Site : the wreck of the Haven lies about 1.2 miles
off Arenzano. Co-ordinates: 43 deg 10,13 north / 06 deg 35,75 east Depth : the top deck lies at 32m and the deepest portion of the ship (her stern) at 82m. |
||
| THE DIVE | ||
Diving the VLCC Haven is an
event that cannot be forgotten; she is one of the best dives of the Ligurian
cost. In crystal clear water, she lies straight up on her keel, one third
of her bow amputated. The dive takes place on the stern, where the castle
is still in perfect condition. The deck lies at 56m but does not have
any particular interest. Marine life is now booming on this wreck, schools
of fish come to met the divers during there visit. Due to her size, a
few dives are necessary to visualize the ships layout. A visit to the
rudder (whose height is not less than 16m) and the propellers is a dive
in itself, beware they lie in over 80m of water. Penetration is possible
all over the castle and in one of the opened holds (the one that exploded),
but their is not much interest to it. The funnel however is worth taking
a good look at, its huge and can even be penetrated!!! |
||
| DIFFICULTY | ||
The main difficulty lies in the depth
and the overall size of the ship. Their is generally only mild currents
and the visibility is usually excellent. The dives will be done most commonly
on air to visit the castle and the funnel (beware of the narcotic effects
of air at these depths) and on a helium based mixture for those who wish
to see the rudder and propeller. Any penetration will take special care.
