The Pontida was a freighter of 6,018 tonnes measuring a total length of 122m, 17.50m at the beam and a draught of 8.20m. She was powered by triple expansion motors allowing her to reach the speed of 10 knots.
HISTORY

Built in 1907 by Wm. Doxford & Sons at Sunderland, the Pontida was the property of the Ferrovie dello Stato from Genova. On the 26th of November 1917, after leaving Baltimore and cruising towards Varazze with tons of flour cargo, she probably hit a mine. The explosion was extremely powerful and she sunk in less than one hour.

Site : the wreck of the Pontida lies about 1 mile off Varazze.
Co-ordinates: 44 deg 21,19 north / 08 deg 32,04 east
Depth : the top deck lies at 75m and the deepest portion of the ship (her stern) at 95m.
THE DIVE

Sitting straight up on her keel, the Pontida seems to be waiting at port to take off. The general condition of the wreck is still good and the visibility surrounding her is usually excellent. The Pontida is a beautiful dive now that marine life has taken over. The whole site is covered with growth, shells, lobsters and schools of fish have elected this place as their new home.
DIFFICULTY
Top
The main difficulty lies in the depth. Their is generally only mild currents and the visibility is usually excellent. The dives will be done on trimix and penetration will be done with caution.
