WRECKS - GHIANNIS D. (DANAE) Home
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Ghiannis D. was a freighter. She moved 2'900tx for a length of 99m. She was powered by two engines and two propellers.
HISTORY
Probably built by a Japanese shipyard under the name of Shoyo Maru, she was then sold and repurchased by many different ship owners. At the bow, her different names appear as the many layers of paint erode away, Markos then Ghiannis D. (the D is the initial of the Greek naval company Danae). Her wreck on the 19th of April 1983 remains a complete mystery. She left from Rijeka heading for Hoeida (on the Yemen cost of the Red Sea) and hit the reef of Sha'ab Abu Nuhâs.
DIVE SITE
Site : on the north reef of Sha'ab Abu Nuhâs.
Co-ordinates : 27 deg 34,25 north / 33 deg 55,75 east
Depth : the top of the bow lies at 10m and the deepest part is at the stern at 27m.
THE DIVE
The stern of the Ghiannis D. lies with a slight tilt on port side as for the bow it lies completely on her port side. The best place to start the dive is at the stern, the afterdeck up to the no 1 hold is still intact. The propellers are buried in the sand with only a small portion of the starboard one still visible. The funnel marked up with a big D remains in perfect condition. The bridge is intact but all her instruments have been striped off. At the foot of the funnel is the access to the engine room that remains in a remarkable state. The sight of the engines is impressive; their are lines of valves and mainsprings only slightly concretioned. A visit to the holds is of no interest since their is nothing left inside to see. The central portion of the wreck is a ruin, however its the best place for the observation of the crocodile fish and the stone fish. The bow in spite of her tilt is well conserved. Their is the main winch to be seen and the front mast that remains in place. The mooring chains will lead us to the anchors lying on the sea bed (she was anchored in when wrecked).
DIFFICULTY
There are no particular difficulties, no fishing nets. However their can be at times strong currents. Beware when you visit the engine room, it is dark and holds very fine sediments. Nitrox 36 would be the gas of choice for this dive, giving us over 30 minutes without leaving the NDL.
