WRECKS - F2 Home
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The F2 was an escort vessel of 790 tonnes for a length of 75m, 8.8m at the beam and a draught of 3.35m. She was powered by two turbines which drove each a propeller bringing her to a maximum speed of 28 knots. Her armement consisted of two 105mm canons and four 20mm anti aircraft canons. She needed a crew of 121 men.
HISTORY
Built at the Germaniawerft shipyard at Kiel, she was launched in 1936. Just before the war she was converted into a torpedo recovery vessel and gained 5m in length and her weight was reduced to 756 tonnes. At the end of WW2 she was given to the allied as war reparation and moored in Gunter Sound north of Lyness. On the 30th of December 1946 just a few months later during a storm a complete section of the ship collapsed and she sunk. In 1967 the F2 was purchased by Metrec Engineering for salvage.
DIVE SITE
Site : the F2 lies in the bay of Scapa Flow, in the Orkney Islands.
Co-ordinates : 58 deg 50,46 north / 03 deg 11,30 west
Depth : the maximum depth is at 18m.
THE DIVE
The wreck of the F2 lies on port side in a pretty clear water. The bow is well conserved up to the observation decks, further aft she is completely destroyed, all thats left is a heap of twisted sheets of metal and debris. The visite will therfor concentrate on the fore section. The mooring chains are still hooked on the capstans et go all the way down to the sea bed. Just aft is the 105mm canon oriented towards the bow defeating the time. More aft is a hatch leading to insides of the ship. On starboard aft of the decks, large openings allow penetration in gangways and allow a nice stroll within the daylight limit all the way. You can penetrate further inside but with caution. The stern is destroyed and presents no particular interest. A distinctive feature of this dive is the prescence of a line attached between the bow of the F2 and the wreck of the YC 21, a barge of 550 tonnes used to salvage the F2 and sunk in November 1968. In her holds their still is 20mm anti aircraft canon.
DIFFICULTY
There are no particular difficulties, no fishing nets. The visibility can however fall du to the presence of sediments inside the wreck. Nitrox 36 would be the gas of choice for this dive, giving us over 30 minutes without leaving the NDL.
